Eve, Roman, Pearl, Karu, and Ken met at the Marek Ranch the next morning. The dogs were eager to be up and ready to tackle the day of the Harvest Moon Festival. Eve was eager too, but something else lingered beneath the surface after what she had seen and read last night. Fear. A faint belief that this town was actually haunted.

“You need another coffee?” Roman asked, analyzing her face. “Late night?”

“Yeah, another coffee sounds great,” she replied.

“How about a beer?” Ken grinned and unzipped a cooler bag at his side, thrusting a Coors Light in her direction.

“Uh… it’s ten am,” Eve laughed.

“Saturday! Saturday at ten am.” He wiggled the beer.

“I’ll wait until we get there,” she said. “You chug it back for me.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

He cracked the top and took several sips, his Adam’s apple working hard.

“I’ve got a pot in the office,” Roman said. “I’ll grab you a to-go mug.”

“Think they’ll have coffee there?” she asked.

“They… might.”

“There’s lots of booths. I’ll bet they’ll have something there. Don’t bother. We should get moving.”

“You sure?” he asked, placing a hand on her back.

Eve nodded.

He cleared a hair from her face with his other hand, bent down to kiss her forehead and said quietly, “We’re gonna have a good time today.”

“Right.” She kissed him back, getting up on her toes to plant one on his lips. “Yes, we are. Once a year.”

Ken grinned and whooped. “Once a year!”
